Welcome to Burks 2024 -2025

Welcome

Dear Burks Eagles,

We are so excited to kick off the new school year! Our theme this year is “Hollywood Style” and our staff have been preparing for the best year ever! We can’t wait to meet all our students and families and we want to welcome you to “The Best School in the World”.  We have a few notes and some information below to help parents prepare for the first couple weeks of school.

School Supplies

School supplies can be found HERE.

Attendance

It is the policy of MISD and Burks Elementary for you to contact the school when a student is absent.  Please send a parent/doctor note to your child’s teacher.  It is very important that we have written documentation for the absence within 3 days of the absence.  In the event of multiple absences, you will receive an attendance letter generated from the central office stating the date of absences.

Lunch Information

Our greatest desire is to ensure a safe and orderly learning environment for all students.  During the first weeks of school, procedures and expectations are taught and practiced.  We are asking that lunch guests wait until after the first two weeks to join their children so that cafeteria procedures will be firmly in place. All visitors need to have a photo ID.

Free/Reduced Lunch Applications

The free lunch for all students program that was part of the Covid Relief Fund has ended. Breakfast is free for our students but lunch applications need to be completed for free/reduced lunches. We will send forms home to be completed and returned to the school ASAP.  This application has to be completed each year for eligibility.  Please return the form before September.

Food Services

Drop-off procedures for morning

  • Students will enter the building through the front doors beginning at 7:15.

  • Breakfast served from 7:35-7:55 only.

  • 8:00 tardy bell – school begins promptly at 8:00.

Pick-Up procedures for afternoon – we ask that students not be checked out of school between 2:30-3:07. For the safety of our campus staff, we need to work together to prepare for dismissal during this busy time of day. Please make every effort to call about any change in dismissal prior to 2:30. Please make sure the office knows of any dismissal change. Teachers are not able to check email while teaching so please call the office if it is a same day change.

**Any person picking up a student(s) MUST have the required “Pick Up Card”. If a person does not have the pick up card, they will be asked to go to the office for ID verification.**

We have only 3 Dismissal options:

Walker            OR                  Car Rider                   OR                  Bus Rider

If there is an emergency preventing you from picking up on time, please notify the office. The office closes at 3:30 and plans will need to be made to monitor a student staying that late.

EAGLE Communication

Every student will be issued some form of communication folder/binder that will be sent home for parents to review with their child.  After reviewing any notes, homework, newsletters, order forms, information flyers or other items in the folder, please sign the parent signature page.  This is a valuable tool that will keep communication open between home and school.  The first Friday of each month a school newsletter will be sent home about upcoming events. Keep up with us on Facebook through our page Nell C. Burks Elementary School.
